Tennessee Right to Life Applauds
Legislative Passage
of Strengthened Abortion
Non-Coercion Efforts
(Nashville) Leaders of the state’s leading
pro-life organization expressed appreciation to members of the General Assembly
who voted overwhelmingly to pass HB 3301 / SB 3812, Tennessee’s Freedom from Coercion
Act.
“Tennessee is making strides toward
protecting women and girls who are pressured into abortions they do not want,”
said Karen Brukardt, legislative lobbyist for Tennessee Right to Life.
“With this vote Tennessee’s legislators are showing their
sensitivity and support for some of our state’s most vulnerable individuals,
especially women at risk of abuse and violence if they don’t submit to unwanted
abortions,” Brukardt said.
As
passed, the Freedom from Coercion Act requires posting of signs outlining the
state’s existing non-coercion policy in facilities where abortions are
performed including private physician’s offices, hospitals and surgical
centers. Penalties for failure to post the signage are $2,500 a day for
abortion facilities and $1,000 for physicians’ offices.
